How to change the appearance of Instagram bio text
Instagram’s bio editor only accepts plain text, so there is no font menu. Unicode characters work around this: they are letters from other alphabets and symbol blocks that look like stylised versions of A–Z.
Type your bio above, choose a style, check the live preview, then copy and paste it into Edit profile. Remember that the limit counts characters, and some styles use characters that count differently on different systems.
Unicode text for Instagram captions
Captions are a good place for a stylised first line. Instagram shows only the first line or two before the “more” link, so a bold or cursive opening can improve the first impression.
Keep hashtags, mentions and links in normal text. Styled letters are different characters, so a styled hashtag will not link to the real tag.
Popular aesthetic text styles
Cursive is the most popular choice for names and bios. Gothic suits dark or music-focused accounts. Bubble and vaporwave give a playful or retro look, and tiny text is often used for small taglines under a name or between emojis.
Mix styles in moderation: one styled name and a mostly plain bio is easier to read than several styles at once.
Why Unicode text is different from downloadable fonts
A downloadable font changes how the same letters are drawn, but only on a device where the font is installed. Unicode styled text replaces the letters themselves with different characters, so it can be pasted into apps that do not let you choose a font.
The trade-off is that the letters are no longer ordinary letters. Search, translation and screen readers may not recognise them, and not every device has a font that covers every character.
Accessibility and compatibility considerations
Assistive technology may read styled letters one by one or ignore them. Keep your name, contact details and any call to action in plain text where people rely on them.
Always test on both iPhone and Android if you can. Rarely used shapes and glitch effects are the most likely to appear as boxes.
Instagram Unicode text FAQ
Can I use fancy text in my Instagram username?
No. Instagram usernames only accept letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so styled characters will be rejected. Use styled text in your Name field, bio or captions.
Does fancy text count towards the bio character limit?
Yes. Instagram counts the characters you paste. Some styled characters may count as more than one on certain systems, so leave a little room under the limit.
Will styled text affect search?
Instagram search relies on normal letters. If you want people to find you by a keyword, include it in your Name field in plain text and style the rest.
Why does my bio look different on Android?
Android and iOS ship different system fonts, and Instagram uses the device font for characters its own font lacks. Cursive, bold and italic are the most consistent.
Are these real fonts?
No. They are Unicode characters that resemble styled letters. That is why they can be pasted into places that do not support fonts, and also why screen readers may not read them as words.
