Compatibility: Unicode styles are not official formatting. Display and acceptance vary by app, device and field, so check the preview and test before you post. Screen readers may read styled text letter by letter.

How Unicode text works in Discord

Discord displays whatever characters it receives, so Unicode letters from other blocks can be used in your display name, messages, profile text and many channel names. The characters are not an official formatting feature; they are different letters that look like styled ones.

Type your text, choose a style, check it in the message and profile previews, and paste it into Discord.

Unicode text versus Discord Markdown

Discord Markdown formats text you type in messages: **bold**, *italic*, __underline__ and ~~strikethrough~~. It keeps text as normal letters, so it is searchable, readable by screen readers and works across all devices.

Unicode styling works in places Markdown does not, like display names, About me and channel names. Use Markdown for message emphasis and Unicode where Markdown is unavailable.

Decorative text for Discord profiles

A small-caps or gothic display name stands out in a busy server. Keep your About me readable, and avoid heavy glitch text that can overflow into other lines.

Remember that mods and other members may search by your name. A plain-text alias in your About me can help people find you.

Special characters in channel names

Text channel names are converted to lowercase and spaces become hyphens, which means capital-only styles and spaced styles like vaporwave may change when you paste them. Try small text or bold in lowercase, and use voice channels and categories where names are less restricted.

Server rules or community settings can also affect what names are allowed.

Compatibility with different devices

Discord uses your device’s fonts for characters it does not include, so styled text can look different on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Cursive, bold, small text and bubble are the safest choices.

Unicode styling is not an official Discord featureDiscord accepts many Unicode characters in display names, messages and channel names, but usernames are restricted and channel names are transformed. Heavy glitch text can overflow and may be filtered by some servers.

Discord Unicode text FAQ

Can I use Unicode text in my Discord username?

No. Discord usernames only allow lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Use styled text in your display name or server nickname instead.

What is the difference between Unicode text and Discord Markdown?

Markdown formats normal text, so it stays readable and searchable. Unicode text replaces letters with other characters, so it works where Markdown does not, but it can be harder to read and search.

Can I use fancy text for Discord channel names?

Often yes, but text channel names are lowercased and spaces become hyphens. Capital-only or spaced styles may not survive.

Why does zalgo text look broken in Discord?

Zalgo stacks many combining marks on each letter, which can overflow the line or be clipped. Use the lighter Glitch style, or keep zalgo to short text.

Does this tool connect to my Discord account?

No. It does not use the Discord API or ask you to log in. Copy the text and paste it into Discord yourself.
